If you’re searching for haunted places in the Outer Banks, these five eerie destinations combine mystery, history, and a touch of the paranormal.

The Outer Banks is known for its sun-soaked beaches, wild horses, and breezy coastal charm—but beneath the surface lies something much darker. From ghost ships and vanished colonists to haunted lighthouses, the OBX has a long, chilling history that still echoes today.

1. The Lost Colony of Roanoke

No list of Outer Banks haunted locations would be complete without this one. In the 1580s, over 100 English settlers mysteriously disappeared from Roanoke Island. There were no signs of battle—just a single word carved into a tree: “Croatoan.”

📍 Location: Fort Raleigh, Roanoke Island
👻 Local Tip: Visitors have reported shadowy figures and whispers in the woods near the site.

2. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

The tallest brick lighthouse in the U.S. has stood through wars and storms—and may still be home to its long-gone keepers. Paranormal reports include footsteps on the stairs, flickering lights, and cold spots felt even on warm nights.

📍 Location: Buxton, NC
👻 Local Tip: Visit after sunset for a spookier experience—especially if you’re the last one there.

3. The Carroll A. Deering Ghost Ship

In 1921, this five-masted schooner was found aground on Diamond Shoals with no crew in sight. Food was set on the table, the lifeboats were gone, and no one was ever found. Some blame pirates or mutiny. Others whisper of something more supernatural.

📍 Location: Near Ocracoke (original wreck site)
👻 Local Tip: Visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to see artifacts and learn more.

4. The Whalehead Club, Corolla

This elegant 1920s mansion has a haunted reputation. Guests and staff report disembodied music, footsteps, and cold breezes in empty rooms. EMF meters used by investigators spike frequently throughout the home.

📍 Location: Corolla, NC
👻 Local Tip: Ask your tour guide if they’ve ever stayed after hours—some say the spirits only come out when it’s quiet.

5. Island Farm on Roanoke Island

This restored 19th-century homestead looks peaceful—but many visitors leave with goosebumps. From flickering lights to unexplained touches, Island Farm is one of the lesser-known but truly haunted places in the Outer Banks.

📍 Location: Manteo, NC
👻 Local Tip: It’s a short drive from downtown Manteo—perfect for a daytime scare before joining our tour at night.
